My journey to becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner began during my six years as a cardiac nurse. I realized quickly that I wasn’t treating just my patient, but their entire family as well. Emotions were always running high; I saw anxiety and depression about diagnosis and prognosis, and the powerless, out-of-control feeling of being hospitalized. I found myself talking to them about their sadness and fears just as much as I was about their new heart medications.

I sought out mental health care for myself when my wife and I became parents. The traditional model for perinatal depression and anxiety didn’t quite fit for a person who didn’t carry and deliver the child. I had so many fears. Would my baby bond with me? Would my spouse really see me as an equal parent? Would the rest of the world see me as a babysitter? Did I even know how to take care of a baby? How would my life change with a baby? I even feared dropping her. I’m serious…it was bad, and I felt like I had nobody to talk to about it. I never want anyone to go through that.

I made it through to the other side, and I’m now a mom of three—well, five if you count the two kittens. With their support, I can now help others like me.
